What would (and does) work, is to have a to-do list that has to be accomplished in order to get directions to the video game controller! I hide the controller in the pantry, dryer… all the places a teen would never think to look. I’ve even left it at the neighbor’s. When the kids call to say that their chores are done, I call the neighbor and “release” the controller or give the directions to where it is hidden.
This also works when your teen is too “sick” to go to school. Take the controller to work with you! Then you’ll see how often they are too sick for school!
